UX apprenticeships for career-changers

Apprenticeships have been the best way to learn and break into a creative craft for centuries.

For so many creatives, the best way to learn is by observation and being able to work hands-on in real-time.

Apprenticeships are ideal for career changers because they can quickly add value by applying their real-world experience to a project and team.

What’s the difference between an internship and an apprenticeship?

Every company will define this for itself, but one of the biggest differentiators is that internships are organized directly through college. Many corporate companies “can’t” (won’t) accept career-changers or people from different educational backgrounds for internship positions.

And just the nature of the thing—an apprenticeship is part of a self-taught track and mindset, while an internship is a follow-up to a degree education.

Companies allocate resources explicitly to onboarding and helping interns as part of their educational programs. Internships are an introduction to the workplace in general, and career changers don’t need that, as they have other relevant work experience.

An apprenticeship involves more hands-on observation, initiative, and the ability to try a broader range of things.
